Kanpur Clashes: Clashes erupt in Kanpur over ‘insult’ to Prophet Muhammad; 12 injured, 18 held | Kanpur News

KANPUR/LUCKNOW: A dozen persons were reportedly injured in a clash in Kanpur over an alleged ‘insult’ to Prophet Muhammad during a debate on TV. Mobs hurled bombs and pelted stones at each other after groups of people tried to force shopkeepers to down shutters in Nai Sadak and Yateemkhana areas of the city after Friday namaz, police said.
Preliminary reports suggest that the allegedly insulting remarks were made by BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma during a television debate recently. Police reacted swiftly and arrested 18 persons in an intensive crackdown and brought the situation under control. A total of 12 Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) companies have been sent to the area to maintain law and order. An SP-rank officer, Ajay Pal Sharma, has also been sent from Lucknow to monitor the situation.
“Not only those involved in the violence are being identified with help of video clips of the incident, those who conspired in the act will also not be let off. As many as 18 people have been arrested. The accused and the conspirators will be booked under the Gangsters Act and their properties will be seized or demolished,” said Prashant Kumar, ADG, Law and Order. Local leaders had called for closure of shops on Friday to protest the alleged remarks.
They had also taken out a procession, during which they confronted members of the other community, an official said, adding that “because of which clashes broke out”.
Kanpur district magistrate Neha Sharma told reporters that members of a particular community took to the street in protest and indulged in violence. Several people were seriously injured and have been sent for medical assistance.
Narrating the sequence of events, Kanpur police commissioner Vijay Singh Meena said that around 2 pm, around 50-100 people came and started raising slogans, which was opposed by the other side. Then there was stone pelting. However, the police force controlled the situation to a great extent.
Reacting to the incident, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav said in a tweet in Hindi, “Owing to the failure of the police and the intelligence machinery, at a time when the President, Prime Minister and chief minister were in the city, the provocative statement given by BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma caused unrest. The BJP leader should be arrested. We appeal to all to maintain peace.”
