Karnataka: Minority colleges may hike private quota MBBS fee by 10%

Bengaluru: Two different consensual agreements were signed by medical and dental colleges in the state. While colleges under Karnataka Professional Colleges Foundation (KPCF) signed an agreement with no increase in fees, two minority college associations agreed to a 10% hike in private quota fees. The government, however, did not confirm if it has inked the deal.
While colleges had sought a 15% fee increase across the board, the government agreed only to a 10% hike, that too only for private quota seats in private medical colleges. KPCF did not agree to it.

We’re tired of waiting. We don’t want an increase only for some seats. We need it for all seats. Whatever be the difficulties, we’ll suffer this year,” said KPCF president MR Jayaram. About 40 medical and dental colleges are members of KPCF but it could not be confirmed.

The Association of Minority Professional Colleges of Karnataka, that has five medical and eight dental colleges under it, agreed to a 10% hike for private seats.

The Karnataka Religious and Linguistic Minority Professional Colleges Association, which has three medical and five dental colleges affiliated to it, also agreed to this condition. “We signed the agreement and submitted it to the government. We’re yet to get it back after it has signed,” said association secretary Narasimha Raju.

The increase will be applicable to MBBS, BDS and PG courses. The private quota fees for MBBS was in the range of Rs 9.9 lakh to Rs 20.2 lakh last year. For BDS, it ranged between Rs 2.7 lakh and Rs 6.8 lakh. For medical post-graduation, it ranged from Rs 1.9 lakh to Rs 50 lakh.

Counseling for PG NEET was delayed as the consensual agreement was not signed and no seat matrix was provided to the Karnataka Examination Authority which oversees admissions to all colleges.
