Plans afoot to double PG medical seats in 3 years

Coimbatore: The National Board of Examination in Medical Sciences plans to double the number of postgraduate medical seats in the next three years from 12,300 to increase availability of specialists, president Abhijat Sheth said here on Friday.

The seats will be increased by 2025, the official said. “We are not utilising our resources effectively. Available resources and infrastructure are adequate to meet the target number of seats if put together in an effective way,” he said.

Presently, 99 specialties are being offered, which are in 29 board specialties, 31 super specialties, 31 special sources and eight diploma courses. “We are planning to introduce one more specialty, postgraduate master’s degree in Medical Education. It will be the 100th specialty. We want to make sure that we build a culture of faculties and teaching and training across the country to motivate doctors” he said.

“Apart from metros and big cities, doctors are required in in tier-two cities and rural areas. Out of the box ideas are required to attract doctors to rural areas,” said Sheth. “We are working to bring public and private institutions together, where doctors can get exposure under Group Accreditation programme. It will be rolled out in December in select institutions on pilot-basis to understand potential bottlenecks.”

Minu Bajpai, executive director of the board, said postgraduate seats were increased from 4,000 to 12,300 in the last few years. “Niti Aayog plans to increase the number two fold. Group accreditation will enable PG doctors to get trained in hospitals with a good case mix,” he said.

While the country has more than 90,000 MBBS seats, it has only 40,000 odd postgraduate seats, said S Rajasekaran of Ganga Hospital in Coimbatore, also the president of the Association of National Board Accredited Institutions. “It needs to be increased,” he added.
