Sri Lanka police curfew lifted at 0800am ahead of protest

ECONOMYNEXT – A curfew imposed on several areas in the capital Colombo ahead of a protest on June 09 has been lifted from 0800am, police chief CD Wickremeratne said in a statement.

The curfew imposed at 2100 last night will be lifted at 0800, he said in a statement.

A mass public protest against President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is planned.

Sri Lanka’s top lawyers grouping the Bar Association has said the curfew was ‘blatantly illegal’.

“The police ordinance does not have a provisions for the imposition of such a curfew,” a statement signed by BASL chief Saliya Pieris and Secretary Isuru Balapatabendi said.

“The BASL wishes to ask the Inspector General of Police under what authority he has declared the curfew.”

The declaration of the curfew is clearly intended to stifle the freedom of expression and dissent in totally un-acceptable and undemocratic and will gravely harm Sri Lanka’s economy and its social and politically stability,” the statement said.

“We call upon the people of Sri Lanka to take all necessary steps to safeguard their democratic rights and to use every peaceful means at their disposal to protect such rights.

“We call upon the Inspector General of Police to immediately withdraw his illegal order.

Sri Lanka’s currency collapsed after the island’s soft-pegged Latin America style central bank printed money for two years and attempted to float the currency with a surrender requirement (forced sales of dollars to the central bank).
